This session will provide a fresh perspective and insight toward achieving an inclusive, equitable, and accessible transportation system. A specific focus will be on marginalized populations complemented by initiatives and strategies currently taking place at the state, federal, national, and international levels that will be helpful for both transportation and health professionals. A team of cross-disciplinary and multi-sector experts will present on specific areas with an active discussion to follow.
A range of important scenarios and topics will be cover:
- Too often transportation systems are created FOR individuals with disabilities, rather than WITH the voices and perspectives of this audience. We will learn about strategies to help health care professionals and transportation planners to engage diverse riders in meaningful ways.
- Promoting equitable and accessible public transit in America’s Communities is an important goal for the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). We will learn about FTA’s mission, major programs, impact of COVID-19 and emerging hot topics in the world of civil rights and transit.
- From conception to completion, community engagement and collaboration are key criteria for bicycle and pedestrian mobility projects of the Texas Department of Transportation’s Houston District. We will learn about District’s initiatives in various cases, such as first-last mile connections, areas with EJ populations, or projects that are built on community requests.
- What about other parts of the world? The Latin America and the Caribbean regions have the highest levels of social and economic income inequality in the world. We will learn how to leverage transport for socially inclusive development in an effort to define a path based on unique international experiences.
